Digital Photo-booth build inside the National Museum of Tartu in Estonia
Offering an ergonomic and appealing digital experience
to the museum's visitors
Interaction with kids and adults
The Tallinn project in 2015 aimed to attract museum visitors to a photo booth and provide them with an easy and enjoyable way to take a picture and link it to their personal information, including name and email, which was collected by the government.
The Project
The goal of the project (Tallinn, 2015) was first to catch the attention of the museum’s visitors and bring them to the photo booth device.
Then, to offer them an ergonomic and appealing digital experience to have their picture taken and link it with their data (name, email) collected by the government.
My Role
Collaborating closely with the designers of Velvet®, the biggest Design consultancy of Estonia, I explored and designed the experience of the Digital Photobooth which will be installed inside the National Museum of Tartu.
Using design thinking techniques, I developed a digital experience based on the story of Johannes Pääsuke, an Estonian photographer who died at the age of 25, in 1918, after having taken 1308 photos and directed 7 films.
Here you can find more info about the whole museum project.
Step 1 – Empathize and define
Ethnography research: we observed users behaviour in different interactive exhibits, and we took it as inspiration to create our interaction.
Analysis of the user needs: emotional connection through storytelling, intuitive interactive digital experience, design-for-all.
STEP 2 – IDEATION THROUGH GAMESTORMING
I organized a co-working session made of two sessions of game-storming to generate innovative solutions. Then we evaluated the different ideas with local Estonians, as this product was targeted at Estonian end-users.
STEP 3 – CONCEPT AND SCENARIO DEVELOPMENT
We designed a digital and physical object,
which recreates the atmosphere of an old photo booth through video storytelling.
Developing the scenario allowed us to understand the different levels of the digital and physical interaction
First interaction with the photobooth
(video storytelling)
The visitor entering the museum
The photo shooting experience
Step 4 – Prototyping
We developed a cardboard prototype with headphones (I did not make any photo).
Design for all: we really took care about the device’s size so that everyone can type and have no problem to interact. Create a perfect harmony between all percentiles (size of the users) and size of this product was our goal. Consider that Estonian people are very tall 😉
We also considered to add directional speakers for blind people,
the interaction being mostly audio. In that case, we would have assistants helping them inside the museum.
We developed a video interaction prototype.
